Amoxil, also known as amoxicillin, is a penicillin antibiotic. Amoxil is used to fight against bacteria in the body. There are various infections that can be treated by Amoxil like ear infections, pneumonia, bladder infections, E. coli or salmonella infections and gonorrhoea. Amoxil is also used to treat children with sinusitis, strep throat and common colds and flu. Furthermore, it can be used in cases like skin infections, when they have been caused by bacterial strains. Sometimes, this drug is combined with clarithromycin, another antibiotic used to treat stomach ulcers successfully.
The brand name Amoxil tends to taste more like bubble game compared to the generic form. If you have infants or newborns under the age of three months, you must get a lower dosage of Amoxil prescribed compared to older children. Amoxil is considered to be the first choice by experts to treat common Paediatric infections that include sinusitis and ear infections.
It is not recommended for you to take Amoxil if you are allergic to amoxicillin or to any type of antibiotics such as penicillin, oxacillin, dicloxacillin and ampicillin. Also, if you have any other types of allergies such as mononucleosis (or mono), bleeding or blood clotting disorder, kidney or liver disease or asthma – you should not take Amoxil without consulting with your doctor.
For those who are taking birth control pills and are to take Amoxil alongside, you must be aware that birth control pills may become less effective. The best solution would be to use alternative non-hormone method of birth control (like spermicide, diaphragm and condom) – so as to prevent pregnancy while Amoxil is taken. Continue with your Amoxil medication until the full length of prescription.
There are cases when antibiotic medicines cause diarrhea, and this could be a sign of the birth of a new infection. When you notice that your diarrhoea is bloody or watery, immediately stop taking Amoxil and call your doctor right away – and consult if you should use anti-diarrhoea medicine for it.
Furthermore, you must know that Amoxil is will not work as a viral infection treatment – such as for flu or common cold.
Amoxil is available in a number of forms like oral suspension, Paediatric drops, capsules, tablets and chewable tablets. Those in capsule forms are taken in 250 and 500 milligramme dosages, the tablets come in 500 and 875 milligrammes, chewable tablets are taken in 125, 200, 250 and 400, while the suspension tablet come in 200 and 400 milligrammes. The strength of the powder varies. Amoxil does not need to be refrigerated, although it is the preferred mode of storing.
Amoxil could result in side effects such as diarrhoea, agitation, insomnia, nausea, rash and hives. However, these symptoms are rather mild and not every person that takes Amoxil will experience such negative effects. Patients need to inform their doctors beforehand if they have hay fever, hives, asthma or other types of allergies. If you feel rashes, fevers, itching, joint pain or swollen lymph nodes coming on – you will need to stop this medication.
